From the first days after birth until approximately two weeks after birth some 80% of mothers experience what is called “Baby Blues”. Women are often weepy and emotionally fragile and this reaction is accompanied by symptoms which may include among others:

  • Sadness
  • Anxiousness
  • Hypersensitivity
  • Irritability
  • Crying
  • Mood swings
  • Tension
  • Fatigue
  • Sleep difficulties
  • Changes in Appetite

The Baby Blues usually disappear without treatment within two to three weeks.
A good way to help support the postpartum mother at this time is to provide meals, babysitting for the newborn and other children so Mom can rest or take some much needed time for herself. Additionally, help with household chores such as laundry and dishes is invaluable.  Encourage the postpartum mother to eat properly. Be a listening ear for her to talk about what she’s going through and other needs she may have.
If the period of the blues worsens, talk with your family doctor or and call NITZA at 02 500 2824.
